Can Beagles Eat Papaya?

can beagles eat papaya

The papaya is the fruit of a plant that belongs to the Carica genus. It’s native to South America and has since been spread by humans around the world. The fruit typically has a yellow skin with green flesh on the inside.

It is often served raw, as it can sometimes be bitter if consumed in large quantities and cooked. The fruit is also a common ingredient in juices, syrups, and candy.

Today the papaya plant can be found growing in tropical and semi-tropical regions all around the world.

Most dogs, including beagles can eat papaya with no ill effects. It’s not considered toxic to them, but it is important to remember that it should be given in moderation.

Beagles are notorious overeaters if not supervised, and papayas are high in natural sugar. Too much consumption of sugary fruit can lead to negative health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease in the long term.

Benefits of Papaya for Beagles

When eaten as a whole fruit (not canned or candied), papayas can have great health benefits for beagles and all dogs alike. Some of the most prominent health benefits include:

  • Papayas Are A Great Natural Source Of Dietary Fiber

Dietary fibers are found in foods high in carbohydrates and include fruits like papayas, guavas, and raspberries, vegetables, roots and grains. They are known for their ability to not only help good bacteria thrive in the digestive tract, but also to help glucose absorption, which helps prevent belly fat formation.

Fiber can also help moderate a dog’s blood sugar and hunger, which can be helpful for breeds like beagles who are particularly food-motivated.

While most standard dog foods have fiber included, getting fiber from fruit is a great way to supplement a beagle’s intake.

  • Papayas Are High In Anti-Oxidants.

Antioxidants are natural substances that slow down or prevent the spread of cell damage by damaging fats. They have been shown to help lower chances of cancer, reduce bad cholesterol and improve the immune system response.

The main antioxidants present in papayas are vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

These three vitamins are essential for any healthy dog, and have been directly linked with a decrease in risk for heart disease.

Vitamin E specifically has also been shown to help slow the growth of plaque in the coronary arteries, while vitamin C is a natural immune system booster.

  • Papaya Is High In Potassium

Potassium is a mineral that keeps the body functioning properly and makes it receptive to muscle contraction and relaxation during times of stress.

As energetic working dogs, beagles have been shown to suffer from muscle cramps, and high potassium levels that can help prevent this condition from occurring.

In addition to lowering muscle tension, potassium is an electrolyte that can help prevent dehydration for dogs that want to drink water regularly. This can be particularly helpful in hot summer heat, or if your beagle is showing any specific signs of dehydration.

It also helps regulate the blood pressure in dogs through regulation of fluid balance in the body.

  • Papaya Is High In B Vitamins

Increasing the intake of vitamins in your dog’s diet is a fantastic way of ensuring his or her health and general well being.

B vitamins are essential for the healthy functioning of the nervous system and energy production, and it is important to ensure that all dogs get adequate amounts to keep their physical performance at its best.

As one of the longer-living breeds of dogs, beagles are particularly susceptible to the beneficial effects of vitamin B12, which has been shown to help increase their chance of avoiding neurological conditions such as epilepsy, arthritis, and dementia.

  • Papaya Is A Good Source Of Calcium For Dogs

Calcium is essential for the health and longevity of a dog’s bones, teeth, and gums. Most dog foods are supplemented with calcium, but there are naturally occurring sources in fruits and vegetables that can help support muscle tone as well.

The calcium present in papaya is rich in both forms, which is beneficial for dogs that want to have a healthy skeletal structure.

Side Effects of Papaya for Beagles

While papayas are relatively harmless to most dogs, there can be a few side effects if eaten too much or in conjunction with other foods. Some of these side effects include:

  • Diarrhea

While the consumption of papaya is usually well tolerated, it can lead to diarrhea and stomach upset if eaten in excess. This can be a problem in larger breeds that are likely to eat large amounts of food.

This often happens because of the high sugar content in papaya, which has been linked to diarrhea in dogs.

Additionally, if papaya is a new fruit, you should introduce it slowly as dogs have sensitive stomachs for most new foods in general.

  • Bloating

Papaya contains both fructose and fiber, which is a combination that can lead to excessive bloat and stomach distress.

Dehydration can also occur if the dog is not given enough water to offset this bloating. If you notice your dog experiencing excessive bloating, it would be best to avoid papayas until the symptoms are gone.

Additionally, if beagles eat the peel, they can have trouble digesting it, which can further lead to digestive distress and more bloating. It’s best to only give them the meat of the fruit to avoid this altogether.

  • Allergic Reactions

There are rare cases where dogs have been shown to develop allergic reactions from papaya consumption.

This almost always presents itself in the form of excessive itching and scratching, often on the back or behind the ears. For this reason, food allergies are often mistaken for skin allergies.

When diagnosing an allergic reaction to food, it’s best to take the elimination diet approach.

First remove papaya from their diet entirely and don’t change anything else in order to determine if that was the cause behind their reaction.

If their symptoms stay away after a few days, it’s likely due to an allergy from papaya.

  • Hypoglycemia

One of the side effects of papaya can be the onset of hypoglycemia, which may occur if a dog has been given excess amounts of sugar.

The high sugar content can throw off blood sugar levels, and can be particularly harmful or dogs with a history of hypoglycemic episodes, prediabetes, or type 1 or 2 diabetes.

Beagles are also prone to hypoglycemic reactions because they notoriously eat fast, which can spike their blood sugar levels.

How to Feed Your Beagle Papayas

Papaya is a delicious food that can be given to your beagle fresh, frozen, or dried. For best results, try and stick with organic brands that are grown in tropical areas so your dog is getting the most out of this great fruit.

  • Fresh Cubed Papayas

Fresh papayas can be eaten as is by many dogs. While there are some dogs that will eat them whole and without any chewing, many dogs will enjoy having the fruit cubed for easier consumption.

  • Dried Papayas

The dried form is also a great way to get your dog to eat papaya, and it can be fed as a treat or added to their favorite biscuit. The fruit can also be soaked in water to create a tasty juice that will help promote hydration.

Additionally, dried papayas are able to keep fresh much longer, which can be great for those looking to use papayas as high value rewards for training.

  • Papaya Puree

For those dogs that will not eat this fruit whole, papaya puree is a good way to get them to eat more.

You can easily puree papaya in any blender or food processor. I like to use my food processor to puree my papayas and mangoes, and then drizzle that blend on top of my two beagles’ kibble dinners.

Best Papaya Treats for Beagles

While there aren’t a lot of papaya treats geared toward dogs available in pet stores and online, you can still do a lot with dried papaya chunks, easily found available online. Here are a few of the papaya products I like to use with my beagles:

Oh! Nuts Dried Papaya Chunks

Oh! Nuts Dried Papaya Chunks | 2lb Bulk Bag of Diced Dry Pawpaw Tree Papaya Bites for Snacking & Baking | Light Sugar Coating, Low Sodium, Dairy Free, Low Cholesterol Low Fat & High Fiber Fruits
These dried papaya chunks are very healthy with no added sugars, and my two beagles go wild for them.

They’re diced into small chunks which make them very effective when clicker training, and at 100 calories for every 28 ounces, they can go a long way with just a few little pieces.

MiNU Organic Raw Dried Papaya

MiNU Organic Raw Dried Papaya
What I like about the MiNU brand of raw dried papaya is that they haven’t been cut up yet, and are still packaged in their long, bendy shape.

I’ve found that these make for great chew toys, as they’re very sturdy on their own.

You should always supervise your dog when using them as a chew toy or treat, but they definitely keep my two beagles busy.

Mavuno Harvest Direct Trade Organic Dried Papayas

Muvano organic papaya
I find Muvano Harvest dried papayas are a nice in between of the last two examples.

They aren’t cut into small chunks, but they’re cut up enough to where I feel that I can give my beagles an even serving and still let them have their fun chewing on a sturdy papaya piece.

Final Thoughts

Beagles are known as one of the most loving and active dog breeds, and due to their ancestry, they are particularly intelligent. While this can make them great pet companions, it also means that they require a proper diet to remain in top shape.

Papaya is a sweet tropical fruit that can easily be made into a delicious treat for dogs. It’s full of fiber to keep them regular and rich in vitamins that can help support their immune system. As long as not fed in excess, this can be a great training tool and sweet treat for your beagle at home.
